The 1996 study that found nothing

Researchers Donald Redelmeier and Amos Tversky ran a genuinely careful test: 18 arthritis patients, 17 of whom already believed their pain tracked the weather, recorded their joint pain levels twice a month over 15 months, while physicians independently measured actual joint tenderness and function. When the researchers compared the patients' own reported pain against the specific weather conditions each patient had named as their personal trigger, they found no statistically significant association at all. Their conclusion pointed to a cognitive pattern called selective matching — people notice and remember the days when pain and bad weather coincide, and don't register, in the same way, the many days when they don't.

The 2016 study that found something

Twenty years later, the University of Manchester's "Cloudy with a Chance of Pain" project took a very different approach: a smartphone app called uMotif tracked pain self-reports from more than 13,000 UK participants over fourteen months, with local weather data pulled automatically via each participant's phone location. That much larger, real-world dataset found a real, if modest, statistical relationship — days with higher humidity, lower barometric pressure, and stronger wind were associated with more reports of high pain, with humidity showing the strongest link and, notably, temperature itself showing no clear association at all.

Why this page won't declare a winner

Both studies were conducted by serious researchers using real data, and they point in different directions — a small, tightly controlled clinical study versus a huge, real-world crowd-sourced one, using different methods and measuring somewhat different things. It's worth noting that a physical mechanism is at least plausible even without conclusive proof: changes in barometric pressure could, in principle, affect pressure inside already-inflamed joint tissue, giving the belief a mechanism worth taking seriously rather than dismissing outright, even while the actual evidence for how much this matters in practice stays genuinely divided.
